On Your Mark, Get Set, Read!
By William Lovely and Keaton Argo
"Reading is Fun-damental." "Keep Your Imagination Blooming... Read!"
Just a few quotes from posters you may see in a classroom to encourage reading. One way Mrs. Tivis is trying to encourage reading is by having a Word Count competition between the 1st through 8th grades. "Well, we wanted to motivate the students to read by using friendly competitions, so instead of comparing AR points amongst the class, we are comparing the total words they read amongst other classes. "The Word Count involves 1st grade all the way up to 8th grade right now, and the teachers will be getting involved as well after the upcoming parent-teacher conference."
We asked Mrs. Tivis how long the competition will go on and what the prize will be and she said, "it is going to be an all year thing and there are no prizes right now other then bragging rights. Some classes have competitions between each other, but no competition between all classes." She is wanting the students to read more and thinks this will help motivate them to read more and it will help them achieve overall higher test scores.
So students, get to the library, get your books and READ!
