High School Boys Basketball Preview

With the basketball season just around the corner, we caught up with head boys basketball coach, Coach Queener and asked him what he thought about this season's team. Last year, the Foxes made it to the 2nd round of the Regional Tournament and lost quite a few Senior players, but Coach Queener is looking forward to a successful season,"we're going to do great this season. The boys have a lot of potential. They just have to be under control and not get in too much of a hurry." Coach Queener is looking for leadership, keeping calm, and keeping their head in the game from the seniors. Have a great season boys!!!

Mayara de FAria Carreiro (Mia)

By Danielle Morris

One of the seven exchange students we have this year is Mayara de Faria Carreiro or Mia is what some people call her. She is from Brazil, and is 17. Her birthday is March 13th. She doesn't have a favorite thing about America yet but she does likes it here. "America is so different from my country because we don't celebrate Halloween, the style of the houses are different, schools and most of all the snow I'm looking forward to that I've never seen snow!" Mia said. Mia also said that is was a very big culture shock because she comes from a city, so to live here, in a small city has been very different for her. If you see her around school you should ask here about her country she'd be glad to tell you about it.

Welcome to Fox, Mayara!!!

Serj Agopian

By Claudia Ramirez

Serj Agopian is one of the many foreign exchange students this year. He's from Lebanon and when I asked him how he likes it here he said, "America has just been a great experience for me, even though I have had a lot of sad and stressful moments, it is actually paying off. I love my school, since everyone else is loving me back. Also, I'm on the football team, which is also a great experience."

I also asked him how big of change was it coming here and he told me,"It isn't that big of a change here. The biggest change is that I have a new family and friends. I understand that this factor is part of the experience, that is why it hasn't been so difficult here. If you are wondering if the American food is new to me then no, it's not. Mexican food on the other hand is new and a change to me because there is more diversity here in America."

One of the more interesting replies I got was to the question of whether or not he likes his classes here at Fox. "I love my classes, since i got to choose my classes. In Lebanon we don't have the freedom to choose our own classes, but in America you can choose the classes that you like the most and fit you the best. All of the teachers have been great to me, this is also a factor which makes me love my classes. Fox has been great to me. I can't thank them enough for being great to me. I really appreriate it."
Welcome to Fox, Serj!!!

Why the bell changes?

BELL SCHEDULE CHANGES
By Miriami Sumbadze and Mayara Carreiro

From the beginning of the school year we had 3 minutes between bells for a break, but now we have 4 minutes!Mr. Phelps said that the change was to help students with a little more time between classes. With the 3 minute breaks, there was too little time to unlock locks on lockers and get books and there was a problem getting to class on time. The only big change to adding a minute to the breaks is that we now get out of school in the afternoon at 3:33PM. We also asked about an increase to the lunch period and he said it could be possible.

Fox High Rock Stars!

By Miriami Sumbadze

This is the first year for Fox to have its own show band, not a band like you see on Friday nights, but a rock band! They play modern rock music. Not only do they play during school, but They do play some shows out of school as well, like in churches or other places. Mr Stringer is the teacher of show band, Dalton Wise is the drummer and has been playing on them from one year, Sean Newell is lead guitarist who has been playing guitar for two years. Hope Jones plays the bass guitar and learned how to play the bass during the music class the show band was developed in. Keyarra Lucas is one of the singers and Kyle Teafatiller is the lead singer. When I asked the band about what they liked about the class and the band they said they really like the things they are doing, they love making music. They also told me they are working on a new song so hopefully we get to hear it at school soon! Good job show band!

Fox students take PSAT

by Danielle Morris and Jessica Schmidt
What is the PSAT you ask?? PSAT stands for Preliminary SAT, which is a National Merit qualifying test, if the student taking the test scores high enough they can qualify for the National Merit Scholarship. The PSAT is also a standardized test that prepares a Student to take the SAT, which is a College Entrance Exam, but it will also help the student take the ACT because of the similarities between the two tests.

There were about 12 Fox students that took the PSAT Wednesday morning. The test lasted from 8:20 AM to Noon. The test consists of 5 tests, 2 parts of Math, 2 parts of Reading, and 1 English. There are four, 25-minute test and one, 30-minute test. The 30-minute test is very beneficial because when the students get their test results back, they will also get their test booklet and can review the questions and have the correct answers for those questions they missed. Mrs. Peavehouse says, "the PSAT can be a great learning tool for College Entrance Exams, and I think everyone if they has the opportunity they should take it!"

Here Piggy, Piggy!

By Anissa McConnell and Desmond James

It's show pig time! Well, not quite, but that is not keeping Mr. Kirkpatrick and his ag students from getting ready for the season. As you can see in the picture, these pigs are not big enough yet and are just prospective show pigs. Mr. Kirkpatrick got these pigs from Indiana. He says, "I might make another run back up to that part of the country." We are looking forward to another good year from the Fox Ag students and their show pigs!

Band Carnival 2010 Results

By Claudia Ramirez

From asking band students, parents and faculty, everyone had a blast at Saturday's band carnival. There was a cake and toy walk, photo booth, fashion salon, marriage booth, fish pond, ring toss, dart throw, dime toss, jail, bingo, 3 moon bounces, football throw and of course, a concession stand. "I think it went great, we raised a lot of money and we worked hard building and tearing it down," said Shanda Fore. How much money did the band raise you ask? Mr. Stringer said they raised around $5,000 with the most popular game being bingo. So it sounds like the carnival was a big success.

Fox Academic Team

By Anissa McConnell and Desmond James

What was Oklahoma's original state capital? What is the square root of 2,428? What is the difference between meiosis and mitosis? Do you know the answers to these questions? I bet the Fox Academic Team knows!

The students on this years team are Dillon and Dalton Langley, Ethan Ruth, Samantha Wright, Sean Newell, Conner Jack, William Lovely, Serj Agopian, Joa Plant, and Kaylee Schier. The academic team competes in academic meets. An academic meet is a competition between different schools where they are asked questions from different areas, like math, history, science, etc. It's set up in a Jeopardy! type forum where one team is asked a question and if they do not get the right answer, the other team gets a chance to answer it correctly.

They have had two meets already this year. They won against Thackerville 90-40 and lost to Madill. They will be having meets every Monday for the next three weeks. This coming week on October 11th, they play at Tishomingo against Turner and Tishomingo. Then they will play on October 18th against Wilson and Marietta. They have a district meet on November 13th.

Good Luck to the Academic Team this year!

Twins Twins and More Twins...

By Cheyenne Hagood and Cody Plemmons

Instead of the saying "we look a hundred per" in our school fight song, we might could change it to something about seeing doubles or insert your own creative pun! In the past 10 years at Fox we have become known throughout the state for our unusual amount of twins! Just from asking different teachers and support staff at the school this was the list we came up and we may have left a few out. Brent and Kent Smart, Kyle and Kevin Lewis, Kyle and Gavin Tefatiller, Lindsay and Asheligh Tefatiller, Timmy and Tori, Trent and Seth Beaird, Ryan and Bryan Garza, David and Drew Martin, Dillion and Dalton Langley, and last but not least Chris and Katie Spinger. As you see in the picture is only one set of twins here at Fox Drew and David Martin.

Humanities Class Projects

By Kaylee Schier

Fox now has a Humanities Class!!!

With all the new additions to Fox High School they are having to offer new and different classes, with one of them being a Humanities class. Their are 14 students that enrolled to take the class and Mrs. Kinsey is teaching the class.

They are creating hands on activities for students ages 3-6 years old, based on Maria Montessori's System of Learning. They recently learned that she was an Italian physician, educator, philosopher, humanitarian and devout Catholic. She discovered that a child's brain learned better when they were given something they could touch. The humanities students studied about her and wanted to create something that would follow her footsteps.

Not long after this, they started working on different activities. Mrs. Kinsey divided the class in 5 groups. One group, Ameriah Williams, Catie Spigner and Keyanndra Young, made a dice game. The two dice, one with colors and one with shapes, after students rolled they had to find a shape or color in the room that matched.

Cheyenne Hoggard and Connor Jack made a sand pan activity where students looked at a card which had letters on it and drew it with their finger in the sand then shook the pan where it would erase so they could start over. Alaura Billings and Sarah Galbraith created flash cards with different pictures and words on the cards.

Justin Cornelius, Chris Spigner, and Dillon Langley made a game called DOTS. They created large colored circles and wrote the name of the color on each circle. And they made a spinner with all the colors of the circles. One student spins the spinner and others try to find the dot in the classroom. Sammy Jackson, Jenniffer Wood, Jeniffer Lanham, and Brianna Lovely made a shake box with sponges that are cut into the shape and coordinate with the shapes that are cut into the box.

Their next event the humanities class is working on is a calendar art contest for the Victims Impact Panel in the middle of November. The class is starting to brainstorm ideas but have not really started working on it. Congratulations to the Fox Humanities Class!!! Keep up the good work!!!

See You at the Pole.....PM

By Kaylee Schier and Desmond James

Fox FCA did something different this year. They decided to let all area churches lead See You at the Pole this year. The Churches that participated was Milo Baptist, Ratliff City First Baptist, and Living Word Tabernacle.

It was held at the Fox Football Field at 7 p.m. There were anywhere from 75 to 100 people that came and participated. The devotion was lead by Milo Baptist Youth Leader, Micheal Sanchez. Following the devotion he offered an invitation, and seven people changed their life, by accepting Jesus Christ to come into their heart.

The group of kids, parents, pastors, and youth leaders all joined around the flag pole to say a word of prayer for our nation, leaders, schools, students, and communities. If you didn't get to come this year, maybe you can participate with us next year. Congratulations to you that had a life changing experience last night. Thank you everyone for your support and help.

FCCLA MARCH OF DIMES FUNDRASIER

By Cheyenne Hathorn and Miriama Sumbadze

FCCLA is doing a statewide March of Dimes fundraiser.
March of Dimes is an American health charity whose mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. It was founded by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1938 as the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis to defeat the epidemic disease poliomyelitis, commonly known as polio, which Roosevelt had contracted at the age of 39.

March of Dimes is a community service project. The FCCLA fundraiser at our school has already started. Ms. Crawshaw said, "Danielle Morris was selling bracelets at the football game last Friday night, we will be putting cans in all the grade school classes, and the classes that raises the most will get a cookie and kool-aid party." So when you see one of the yellow buckets like Kaylee is holding in the picture above, give a little to help a worthy cause.

What time is it? FCCLA Game Night!

By Anissa McConnell and Jessica Schmidt

The FCCLA Game Night turned out to be a really fun, successful night. A lot of people came out and everybody had tons of fun! There were 36 students that attended the activities last night. Everybody who came received some type of prize. There were different games and snacks for everyone to enjoy. Remember, if you want to be in FCCLA, the only requirements is that you have at some point been in FCCLA before or, have one of Ms. Crawshaw's classes.

State of the High School

By Anissa McConnell and Jessica Schmidt

The Fox school year is going great so far. There are are few new changes like an 8 period day and shorter class periods. Mr. Phelps says, "the reason we have eight hour days is because, we want to offer more choices for the students because, in a small school we want our students to be involved in everything possible". An eight period day allows for students to participate in more activities and classes and still get their basic classes. The Administration and Board of Education decided on this before school started in August. The elementary is involved in this eight hour day but it does not affect them. Even though the bell rings they operate on a different schedule. Several schools operate on the eight period day with Temple being the closest school.

So far, so good for the beginning of the 2010 school year at good ole' Fox High!
